ABSTRACT: Since the start of the current war in Gaza in October 2023, Israel has been accused of genocide – the crime of all crimes — by activists, scholars, international jurists, and UN officials. How did this spurious charge appear so suddenly in spite of the Hamas massacres that triggered the war? How has it led to such violent rage against Jews from Los Angeles to Amsterdam? The answer is that the charge is not sudden at all, but rather culturally deep-rooted in ways that other international criminal charges are not. The genocide libel springs from antisemitic tropes of Jewish bloody-mindedness to Cold War politics to settler colonial academic theory to the more recent melding of international law and political activism.
  • Webinar by Professors Gilad Chen (U of MD) and Meir Litvak (Tel Aviv University), January 17, 2025, 3pm. Presentation and discussion about the impact on faculty and students at Israeli universities of the war since October 7, 2023, and boycott efforts in recent years.
